Zen monastery Nov 23, 2009
Eiheiji is located in the eastern part of Fukui prefecture. Its founder Dogen was born in Kyoto in 1200. After learning at Enryakuji in Hieizan, then he made voyage to the Song dynasty in 1223. He had learned in the Song dynasty for about 4 years. When he went back to Japan, he were persecuted by conservative people. So he decided to build a temple in Fukui in 1244. Though this temple is inconveniently located, a lot of tourists or worshippers visit there. Because Eiheiji is the head temple of the Soto sect of Zen buddhism. Soto sect is the largest single religious denomination in Japan. About 200 monks are training at this temple.
