A day off to myself. "Phew!" At last. I chat to Sarah (Australia) and Pierre-Marc (Canada) some cool people staying at King Tut's too. Sarah's still suffering from what I'll refer to in my time in Egypt as Cairo Shock. Only a matter of an hour into the city and she'd had her bags inexplicably checked a number of times (as a lone female traveller) and had her credit cards stolen in the process leaving her penniless and p**sed off. She's a fairly hardened traveller as wi…

I'm back in Cairo....what a journey.
The day long snorkel trip in Hurghada was fantastical! We were aboard a beautiful yaught and some some amazing coral! We were warned not to touch the coral while snorkelling but not told why. A few people quickly found out why when they accidentally brushed up on it. It was fire coral. One guy in particular had huge welts across his backside. It was brutal. Still, it was so amazing to see....probably the best snor…

Today is for me is to see the pyramids and visit the Egyptian Museum, visit to Egypt wouldn't be complete without seeing these great pyramids and mummies right? The filipino I met yesterday, Abet decided to come with me to Giza. He's been there a few times but decided to tag along as well. He told me his experience that he rode a horse going to the pyramids and it was painful on the legs and his back after. I also remembered reading the blog of Jeremy (vulindlela) about his c…

Day 8, Marsa Alam, Egypt
After getting all of our stuff out of the room we waited in the lobby for the bus to pick us up and take us to the airport. On the way to the airport we passed a truck that was loaded with dromeday camels. Such a funny sight! It had been a great week and I was so happy to have visited this country. I had planned to go back this february with my friend Danique and go and see the pyramids, but I just cant make it with school! I have way too much work to do and a lot of…

When i and my friend - Ana - had decided to visit Egypt we didn't know that Ehab (Maher) would accompany us during our whole trip but i don't know what we would have done there without him...This trip wasn't just a dream coming true but also the beginning of an amazing and a hopefully everlasting friendship. Shukran Ehab for these unforgetable 9 days - you're an incredibly nice person! God bless Travbuddy!!!!! :-))))

Cairo traffic is possibly the worst in the world. I’ve heard India is supposed to be bad as well, but I have never been there, but what I regarded previously as the most endearing traffic experiences in my life (Mexico City and Damascus) seemed a breeze compared to Cairo.
Four lanes of road means eight lanes of traffic, and right of way is given to the car with the loudest horn or the brightest headlights. Cars, and especially taxis, will wriggle themselves into the narrowest of spaces in…

So is this it??? My Egypt Lonelyplanet still looked new, had that characteristic new-book fragrance and my stickies were all in place of some of the attractions. So is this REALLY it? Is it ALL over? Personally, for me, there was a voice in my head going "Du-bai Du-bai Du-bai DU-BAI... DUUUUBAAAAI" and that brought me immense happiness, but as far Egypt was concerned... au revoir time!
We didn't do much really on the last day except take fab photos of the place we'd go for breakfast - the Pa…

We first went to the Cairo Museum and saw statues, royal mummies, and King Tut's gold laden sarcophagus and all the treasures found in his tomb that were not on tour. Ridiculously unbelievable! It pretty much occupied the half of the 2nd floor of the museum!
Then off we were to the pyramids of Giza! We decided to go in the first pyramid. Inside - it was stuffy and cramp. Crowded with loud and screaming Egyptian kids in a small, limited space did not help the situation ei…

I can imagine somewhere in Holland there's a woman proudly telling everyone how her husband bargained 150 dollars off of a beautiful stone cat...
Yesterday, on our way to Hatshepsut's temple, we visited an alabaster handicraft shop. The alabaster handicraft shop has a work corner where three men were making vases. They did a little performance for us with a song they sang about making a stone vase. The shop was full of souvenirs without price tags, so when you’d like to buy, just a…

Dahab has
somehow managed to escape mass tourism until now hence it is a fairly small
place without the big hotels you will find elsewhere in Egypt.
I get ready
for one of the main things I have been looking forward to do in Egypt - dive the Red Sea.
I have heard many good stories about the visibility of the water being amazing because
no rivers flow into the Red Sea - the coral and fish living should be among the
best in the world as well.
I find a dive
shop…

For New Year's Eve, Ammie and I decided to splurge and stay at the Mena House, a former Sultan's Palace turned elite hotel. Being that we had Egyptian residency visas we got the "Egyptian rate" for the cheap-o room, which was INSANELY cheap at $50/night (normally it would have cost hundreds of US dollars). The building was a former Palace and is located nearly on top of the Giza Plateau, it was very sumptous, lavish and had unbelievable architecture. The compound had gardens…

This was our last full day in Egypt, and how better to spend it out on the water seeing some of the worlds best coral reefs? We boarded our boat and made it a few hundred years off shore and already we had to police on us wanting to do a passport check. Eventually we were on our way to our first reef. The diver who was to swim with us gave a lecture about the corals and the fish. I already knew many of them as I am a saltwater aquariumist.
When we finally landed at our first reef I was one …

WE got a two day delay on our tour, we were suppose to arrive on a Saturday but because of the storm that we got to face in San Francisco we ended up arriving on a Sunday evening...we were on the runway for six hours where i watched two movies, and after running out of food, the plane needs to go back to the gate for refills. So we have to stay overnight in New Jersey to catch our plane the next day. I was hoping that everything would be just fine after all the mishap in San Franci…
