A mixed bag. Mar 06, 2017
Edmonton International airport, which is usually locally known as merely "the airport" nobody calls it EIA, is a major passenger and cargo transportation hub for Northern Canada, serving just shy of eight million of the former in 2015.

Like so many major airports it is not actually technically in the city it is named for but rather it sits in Leduc County some 16 miles South of the city proper and it is huge. It is the largest airport in Canada by land area. There was an airport nearer the centre of the city called Blatchford Field but it closed in late 2013.

As major airports go it is relatively modern having opened as recently as 1960 with several major expansions since then, the last being in 2005 although there are plans to build a third runway once they move the adjacent highway a bit! Work is also underway on a 100 unit shopping complex.

I have been through YEG (to give it it's IATA designation) three times now and found it a bit of a mixed bag and hopefully the pun in this sentence will become apparent shortly.

It has all the usual shopping and refreshment facilities including a rather decent bar / restaurant called the Jasper Bar and Grill (see separate review) before security and there is even a specialist if rather expensive Belgian beer bar after security.

The airport generally is well run, clean and tidy but if I had to find fault with it the fault would be baggage reclaim which has to be among the slowest in the civilised world (hence the former pun and title of the review!

There is no rail service to the airport but there is a Skyshuttle bus and the ordinary bus (service 747 would you believe?) both of which serve downtown. Should you wish to use one then a taxi will cost you a flat rate of $55 to the centre and if you are feeling flush a limousine runs to $66. There is also a year round daily shuttle to Jasper via Edson and Hinton which departs at 1515 hours from Door 10 although prebooking is essential.

There is free wifi in all public areas and also numerous charging stations for your devices. I am glad to report that, as you would expect from a facility like this, is is fully accessible and there are also braille signs, volume control telephones etc. etc.

EIA always seems to be busy but it is a pretty painless place to go through with the sole exception of the baggage reclaim as mentioned. I shall leave the Immigration officials out of this equation!

Take a wild guess! Hasn't half got expensive since the £ took a nosedive intrnationally. I genuinely could not afford to go to Canada now if I wasn't staying with Lynn and in the 'van.
