Edirne Overview

The Ottoman capital city of Edirne in far western Turkey, was founded as Orestias by the ancient Greeks, and conquered and renamed by the Roman emperor Hadrian in the first century AD. After a long and varied career, including being conquered by Constantine in 328 AD, the city was captured by Sultan Murat I in the early 1360s and served as the capital of the Ottoman Empire between 1365 and 1453.

Edirne is known for its beautiful mosques, including the famous Selimiye Mosque. It was built in 1575 by Mimar Sinan, one of the most famous architects of the Ottoman Empire.

When you visit Edirne, you should also see the Bazaar adjacent to Selimiye Mosque, historical railway station and the historical medical school. If you go in the right time, you must go to the Kikrpinar, where traditional Turkish style wrestling championship takes place.
