Broch curiosity and formidable bridges Oct 29, 2010
Brochs are confined almost entirely to northern Scotland and the islands. Why? Pass. Hence this one well south of Edinburgh is a real curiosity. Why was it here? Pass!

As a historic monument it compares poorly with some of the northern ones but a circular walk embracing it from the little town of Abbey St Bathans (ordinary enough in spite of its name) is extremely attractive. There are information boards at the site of the broch and there is enough by way of its lower parts to whet the appetite for more knowledge.

http://walking.visitscotland.com/walks/southscotland/abbey_st_bathans has a walk that has, in addition to the broch, has two pedestrian suspension bridges. I have only been on the less formidable of the two but with my (then) young children causing it to swing violently, it was quite formidable enough.
