Sadly, we left Glasgow and Steph's beautiful family and headed to Edidburgh to meet up with Andy (my friend from Buller), for a while. He had arranged a 'super special' deal to stay at The Sheraton for one night only....but it was a great night! We took advantage of rooftop pool, room service, and amazing food on offer - an experience that was world apart from what we were used to!! Our first stop was Edidburgh Castle, where I fell deeply in love with the story of Mary, Queen of Scots. We al…

Travel Day: Dublin, Ireland to Edinburgh, Scotland

We decided to learn about the city by joining a free walking tour.  The tour is definitely free but the guides reveal that it is customary to tip, and even let you know the usual amount given, which can be viewed as rude or helpful, depending on how much you originally planned to tip.  Anyway, the tour was great.  We found out about the tour from a pamphlet in the hostel, and we met on the Royal Mile by the Starbucks.  Which wasnt opened yet, to Kat's dismay. The guide re…

We left Newcastle yesterday afternoon and took the drive north into Scotland (we had to stop so that Mum could pose next to the Scottish border).  Along the way we stopped at Bamburgh Castle, which was quite impressive from the outside (but we didn't go in) - built right on the edge of a beach, so fabulous views.  We also took a quick drive out to Holy Island, but couldn't stay long as you can only get across the causeway at low tide, so it was pretty much just across and back. …

Took the train out to Edinburgh which was about a 4-5 hour train ride. This time me nor Kelly minded the train ride and met some interesting people. On the way up their we met this older man with his grandson who was just the cutest kid ever. The view from the train ride was amazing and had me dreaming of living in the U.K.Once we finally arrived in Edinburgh we ate at this little resturant. They had the strangest pizza I have ever possibly have tasted, but it was actually quite goo…

i've finally managed to escape the oh-so-fascinating world of hedge fund finance, and am now decadently indulging my long-suppressed wanderlust with 15 months on the road and around the world... *note: apart from the odd review (generally of something not found in your standard guide book), this is really more just a map of my travels than a proper blog, but if you want more information on anywhere i`ve been or what i`ve been up to, send me a message and i`ll see if i can rustle something up.

Reflections on Edinburgh

I started work here at the end of July 2006 and finixhed at the end of November of that year. I lived near Murrayfield and worked just off Princes Street. I was there during the comedy festival when the whole town was buzzing, would thoroughly recommend it, but book your hotel as far in advance as you can. Reginald D Hunter (from U.S.) & Rhys Darby (from New Zealand) were highlights for me. I did a lot of the tourist stuff while I was there, I visited the castle, grassmarke…

Pinching Lauro's naming Blogs after songs idea, this is the general dumping ground for the things that I did before I started blogging properly. The dates will be appropriate, the stories will be vague, and the supporting cast will be a little embarrassed about their dress sense. Such is life.

Here we go!

There's very few things that will get Mark and me out of bed before sunrise, especially in the winter. Because I work funny shifts for work, that's about the only reason I'll set my alarm super early. But today was a very special exception! We got up at about 3am to get ready for our trip to Disneyland Paris. We had to drive through to Edinburgh for our British Airways flight to Paris Charles De Gaulle, which was due to take of around 7am. This wasn't too bad as it meant we didn't get …

3 weeks to go

3 weeks today I will be on my way to Bangkok courtesy of Emirates.  This will be the first time I have flown into the new airport in Bangkok,  but I am sure the taxi drivers will be the same wanting to give me a 'good price' to my guesthouse.  Can't wait to escape the cold winter of Scotland and into the heat.  20 sleeps to go.......
