Eden Oranje Hotel - unofficial TB meet-up hotel Aug 01, 2008

I stayed at the Oranje van Eden hotel during the unofficial TB meet up in Friesland in August 2008. The location of the hotel can not be beaten. It is right across the road from the train station and a short walk away from the city centre.

The rooms are fine but not super big but they got what you would expect – like TV, shower and toilet plus a minibar if you really want to spend some extra cash.

A small minus was the last night the cleaners somehow forgot to clean our room but getting a few spare towels turned out to be no problem and it was pretty easy to get over the fact the bed were not made up.

The reception is open 24 hours and there is parking at the hotel for a fee of 8½ € a day or 1 € per hour. There is a good breakfast in the restaurant in the morning from 7 to 10 with all you need.

And as a must of a hotel hosting a TB meet up there is a business area with computers and high speed internet connections so you can get online and check up if there is any news on TB.

The hotel is located in a most convenient place. It's right across the street fromt the train station. It has a pleasant appearance with a terrace of tables and chairs for the cafe wrapping around the front and one side. The lobby is very spacious and has a bank of computers available for use. The guy checking us in was very friendly. He is also the employee of the year ....so it would be expected.

The room is of average size and is of modern decor. The beds look more comfortable than they actually are, atleast in the room I was given. The matress sagged in the middle. The pillow was comfy. The bath was generous size and nice appointed.

The breakfast is a wonderful selection of many fruits, cereals, yogurts, breads, meats, and eggs. The only issue with it is that I was told upon checkin that it was included. Upon leaving, reception checked me out and I left. Later, I learned that another in my group was presented with a bill for all of the breakfasts (15 euro per person per day of breakfast) for the group and was also told that we had thrown the keys down on the desk and left. So.....I have issue with this hotel and it's business practices. It is a nice hotel. however, I will not stay here again.

Interesting about the breakfasts. I wasn't part of the group arrangement, and my rate excluded breakfast, which I knew perfectly well. In fact I didn't breakfast in the hotel at all. But the bill, when presented, showed that 15 euros had been added each day regardless, and then deducted at the end. This seems very odd, and the advice must be to check your bill carefully!

I started in front of my hotel, the very pleasant Eden Oranje, directly across from the train station.   I worked my way up past the VVV and Gerechtsgebouw to the Wilhelminaplein where I passed on sampling the omelet.   Here you can find the Palais van Justitie (Lion sightings) and Zaailand… Leeuwarden Walkabout
