So, we left costa rica and set off for Quito, the capital of Ecuador, the flight into the city is a revelation in itself as Quito is situated on a high plateau surrounded by peaks and well developed, so that you have ( what I would call) typical colourful housing reaching up the mountainsides. We jumped in a taxi to our first location in the old town ( where we were staying). Its a bit odd here, its so high that for the first day or two you cant quite catch your breath and the simplest physic…

So Bridget and I were finally off to explore South America after what felt like a fairly long month back in the UK! Yay us!!!! First leg of our flight was from London to Miami on American Airlines - seats OK, food crap. The fun really began when we hit Miami airport, with 1.5hrs to get our next flight to Quito it turns out that you have to completely leave the airport and then check yourself and baggage all the way back in. With queues of people at passport control it was all a little stress…

Quito

The most striking thing about Quito is its location.  It’s sprawled across a long, skinny valley in the Andes, and so Quito is a long, skinny city.  It´s only two or three miles wide but more than 20 long.  At 9200 feet, it doesn´t feel like a valley; it feels like a slightly flattened spot at the top of a mountain.  The city of 1.5 million is built up into the surrounding hills on impossibly steep angles (or so it seems to me; Nick, accustomed to San Francisco´s slop…

I know you´re skeptical about the term Ecuadorian Amazon. Prior to this trip, I too thought that the Amazon was in Brazil. Turns out half of the Amazon basin is in Brazil, and the other half is shared by Ecuador, Colombia, Peru, Bolivia, and Venezuela. Who knew. We booked our trip –- four days, three nights -- in Quito through a company called Neotropic Turis; it was a bit more expensive than the others, but it advertised its eco-friendliness. Among other things, this means that they didn…

Arrival in Quito!
posted by:
Jul 06, 2006 - Aug 31, 2006
welllll..we made it! After an initial feeling of culture shock, Quito has grown on me over the course of the day. Our hostel is nice and clean, but perhaps on the noisiest street in the city. Not really, but it´s hard to believe that buses and trucks go on the little street where it´s located. We are staying in the Old City, which has an exponentially lower number of gringos than the ¨New City¨..It has it´s benefits, but coming to the New City tonight was definitely fun. There are …
