Preliminary Visit

When we first got to Quitumbe, we were greeted by shouts of "Alan, ALAN!!!" After a few weeks, we all decided to answer to this name rather than explain for the millionth time that Alan went back to England. The school was much more well-equipped than the one in the jungle, but their playground definitely needed some love. The plans the teachers drew for us involved buying equipment that would have halved our budget (anyone who knows of a free high jump crash mat should contact Greenfo...

Hola from Quito, Ecuador   Friday 5th October – 6:40 p.m.   So this is our first day in Quito and I have to say, on the scale of first days in new destinations, it isn’t really going that well. We went to the Centro Cultural Metropolitano at around noon, after having breakfast (a strange combo of mini-croissants, hash-browns and watermelon… that’s what I had anyway!) and meeting Dad to go to our new hotel, the Hotel Patio Andaluz. The Hotel Patio Andaluz is, according to...

Guayaquil stopover
posted by:

On the way to Guayaquil we had to cross the border into Ecuador. I'm not sure at what time we got there but I had already been asleep and was enjoying some deep dreams when we were suddenly shaken awake and led into the immigration offices, first on the Peruvian side and then on the Ecuadorian side.I had no problems thanks to my trusty EU passport but the customs official was taking his time with Nicole's passport. Then someone else was called who took the passport away to a backroom and we w...

From Quito, to Banos and then surfing on the Pacific! Ecuador uses the US $, and for less than 300 you can jump off bridges, rappel off waterfalls, learn to surf, eat like a king.....the list goes on. The most amazing trip ever!

I eventually make it to Quito after taking a night bus to the border town of Tumbes in Peru then catching a bus across to Ecuador before jumping on another night bus to Quito. This takes three days and I arrive in Old Town Quito at the well run "Secret Garden" hostel a little run down.I spend most of my first day in bed but the following day I wander around the fasinating Old Town of Quito. According to the guide book the Old Town is the safer place to stay in Quito due to the heavy police pr...

THANK YOU to everyone who sends me postcards and help make my collection grow! I APPRECIATE IT SO MUCH! If you sent me a postcard and you don't see it in this blog, it means it's still on its way or I never received it because it got lost or someone stole it. Yeah, it happens.

Well I have semi safely managed to negotiate Colombia!  Other than arrivals and departures it is an absolutely amazing country! So... I departed for Heathrow at 5am in the morning bound for Colombia´s Caribbean coast via Madrid and Bogota.  However Heathrow surprise surprise was in choas after some clever soul decided to deposit a dirty great big plane at the end of the runway.  Hence my Heathrow to Madrid flight was cancelled.  No problems reroute via Miami.  So to...

Oscar has arranged for the driver to take me to the bus terminal at 8:30 at no cost, very kind of him.   The bus leaves shortly after 9.  I feel a bit stupid buying two seats when there’s hardly anyone on the bus.  Perhaps there’ll be more people later?    As we drive towards Ecuador, the terrain changes from flat to mountainous and from dusty brown to green.  We have only one scheduled stop which is at Macara, just over the border in Ecuador, but f...
