Wonderful set-up education Aug 23, 2012
Whether you are interested or not in marinelife this place is a must-visit.

Ecomare is and has many things: it is an animalshelter for stranded sea mammals, it has several marine aquaria, a dune park where guided walk tours are organized, and ofcourse it is a visitors and information centre.

The marine aquaria are beautifully set-up and decorated. It gives a very good impression of the wildlife found in the Northsea, and the staff is always to explain more precise questions you may have.

Also inside the buildings are exhibions on fishing business, and here as well staff is willing to answer your questions on this topic.

Outside there are large basins where the bigger animals live, the sea mammals as harbour porpoises and different species of seal. Feeding time is demonstration time, these animals are not for show however, but staff explains why and how they arrived at the shelter, and what the expectations are for returning to the sea.

The Ecomare grounds are surrounded by dunes which belongs to the centre as well, walks with a guide explaining dune nature can be joined a few times a day. Ofcourse you can also walk the dunes without a guided tour.

We really enjoined visiting this place, if you are on the island, it is well worth the visit.

Entrance fee for adults is 8 euro's

and for children 4/13 it's 4 euro's

Ecomare is the center for the Wadden and the North Sea. They have different exhibitions about the sea and the anmimals that live in the sea. They also have a bird and seal sanctuary, the biggest attraction is the seal feeding wich finds place two times a day: 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. During the feeding the personel tell a lot about the seals, unfortunately that is only in dutch. There also is an underground waterhall with large marine aquariums.

I've been to Ecomare myself many times and think it offers a lot of different things. It is always great just watching the seal :)
