Eating tips in Egypt May 04, 2011
I’ve been to Egypt many times and it is really very lovely place. It is worthless to say it is one of the top destinations in the world due to historical diversity , very good tourist infrastructure and –most important- kindness of Egyptian people and their funny and easy character so it isn’t surprise me calling them in Arab world “ the kings of jokes”.(I will write about this point later)
I can’t wait to be back to my second home since I’ve unforgettable memos in Cairo, Alexandria, Eljouna..etc.
Eating like locals in anywhere in the world is part of tasting the culture of the place and sharing good times with the people.
From my previous experience while in Egypt, Eating may not be found lovely sometimes, the following tips may help:
1- Don’t drink normal water (pipe water), in all Nile countries, not only in Egypt, normal water may not be suitable for drinking so it is highly recommended to have bottled water and should be from trusted manufacturer as well.
2- If you are living in high class hotel or spa ( 4* and above) it is good idea to eat inside hotel restaurant most of the times.
3- What about cooking by yourself, if you are enjoying your stay in furnished apartment cooking can be crazy idea but will definitely be something memorable since you will spend some time making shopping like locals, for sure your time not to be spent in kitchen but preparing some fast dishes and sandwiches with black morning tea will not hijack your time.
4- Try to be conservative in eating. i.e. don’t just eat anything in the street. Especially when you are in a long journey by bus for example you can have some biscuits till you reach your destination where good quality food can be found.
5- Coshari , Tamia , Flafil and pigeon with special Egyptian rice inside(Mahshi, you may not find in any elsewhere in the world) , ok go enjoy that all but should be in a very selected places where quality and cleanness are taken in consideration.
These tips are not to scare you but to make your visit more comfortable instead of being jailed in your room and toilets!
