Food tips! Feb 19, 2013
During my time in Kolkata, the food was exceptional and rather unique within Bengal. This could be said of many regions in India, but there is something different about Kolkata. Here are a few of my tips if you are dining in Kolkata:

- Try the tea in the clay cups. Every other tea stall in India serves the drink in glass or even plastic cups sometimes. These clay cups are rather quirky, environmentally friendly and they give the tea a special feel. I can only compare it to Coca-Cola: drinking it from a glass bottle makes it different somehow.

- The food stalls are fantastic at lunchtime. Most westerners prefer the conventional restaurants, but along the main streets (especially where workers congregate), you can grab fantastic meals for such good value. All of these stalls appear and it’s like going through a food fair: just decide what you want to eat and you will never pay more than 10-30 rupees for an excellent meal.

- During the evenings, many locals love to go for a walk and maybe catch a film. There are plenty of vendors selling vegetable fried goods and ice creams. During some evenings, I could easily do without a meal after feasting on various snacks!

- You have to try the katy roll. It’s like a chapatti which is being fried, an egg fried on top of it (as a layer), some vegetable/meat filling and some fresh salad. It’s wrapped up wonderfully, and makes for a wonderful snack (especially before a film or after some drinks).

- Kolkata is famous for its sweets such as gulab jamun. Even if you don’t have a sweet tooth, I urge you to try them here. They are not overly sugary.

Kolkata loves its food, and by following such tips, you will too!

Haha, that's a nice reason Eva :D It was spicy but not as much as you think. Even if you are scared of spicy food, it becomes addictive and you can tolerate more :)

Thanks Jim! I'm always terrible at captioning my pictures, but if you are in Kolkata, you will find these scenes on street food stalls everywhere! Trust me :D
