Cheap accomm in a great, alternative location. Aug 10, 2005
I stayed on the Eastern Comfort for 4 nights back in 2004. I had a 4-berth, 2nd class cabin which was pretty basic but the beds were okay and it had en-suite facilities. The steps down below deck were very steep so perhaps not ideal if you have limited mobility. There was a good continental breakfast served in a rather cramped space by reception, but on the upper deck was a nice modern bar, open to the public, which served great cocktails to drink as you looked out over the river. This isn't a particularly central location compared to other hostels in Berlin, but its only a 3 minute walk to a U-Bahn station and then about 10 minutes into the city centre. You are also in walking distance to the bars and restaurants of Kreuzberg or you can take a tram into the trendy eastern districts of Prenzlauerberg and Friedrichshain. A big attraction of this location is the East Side Gallery which is a section of the Berlin Wall with approximately 100 paintings by artists from all over the world, making this memorial for freedom the largest open air gallery in the world. To reach the boat, you actually go through a metal gate in the Berlin Wall to get to the riverside! So much history, but also a beautiful location on the River Spree, overlooked by the magnificant Oberbaumbrucke.
