Go back in time and discover unique Pictish caves with carvings Nov 30, 2012
The walk starts in Kirkcaldy - the town on the Fife peninsula coast. You will leave the station and town centre and continue on the coast path. You go through area of former mines and you can even see the old mining towers in the distance. First stop on your walk is Dysart with an old harbour and then you continue to East Wemyss to see a system of caves and the reason, why to go and see this place is the carvings inside the caves. It is mainly one cave (Jonathan’s Cave) with numerous carvings. They are made by Picts (Early Medieval Celtic origin civilization living in the Scotland area) and the age of them is about 900 years. We can see, how the people, who made these must have worked hard as they survived ages... Unfortunately, 'the tooth of time', as well as some unscrupulous visitors have been doing bad service to this unique place. This walk is about 5 miles (7,5 km) long and if too tired, you can take a local bus back to Kirkcaldy. Enjoy your walk and the carvings in caves...
