East One Noodle Bar (West Street) Sheffield Reviews
Apr 07, 2007
Forming part of the West One complex, East One (clever pun that) is a trendy take on a traditional Chinese noodle bar.
A long galley style kitchen is situated at the back of a narrow corridor type room, open to the customers sat alongside it you can see the chefs preparing the food. The main room consists of long tables lined up against the opposite wall to the kitchen with trestle type benches for seating. An impressive wooden staircase sweeps up from the door to a mezzanine level that has a more usual restaurant style seating arrangement.
The menu is vast with numerous variations on noodle dishes (obviously). The servings are plentiful and very filling; the soups are particularly generous arriving in vast bowls filled to the brim with noodles and other ingredients.
The food is relatively simple but well cooked and with a large number of vegetarian options it offered plenty of scope for all our party. Ironically it was the side dishes that were the stars of the show however – particularly the vegetable dumplings which were large, excellently flavoured and piping hot. As the menu explains traditionally these dishes are not served as starters – all your food is cooked at once and just arrives when it's ready so don't wait for everyone to be served before you tuck in.
The one negative point was the drinks selection – the white house wine wasn't up to much and the waiting staff kept getting the drinks order wrong. Despite that East one is an excellent value city centre eatery.
