Wonderful experience to see whales so close Jan 31, 2016
N48°25'21.3" W123°22'56.9" For whale watching locals told us that Victoria is a much better spot than Ucluelet. Prince of Whales is big in Victoria, centrally located below the tourist info centre and has a large advertisement budget. Eagle Wing is smaller and located at the not so centrally Fisherman’s Wharf. It has to be smart, so in low season it invited owners of B&B’s for a free whale watch to show their operation. The owner of our B&B was impressed.

In August 2015, we boarded the Goldwing scarab boat to first visit the sea lions, seals and sea otters at Race Rock Ecological Reserve opposite CFB Esquimalt – Rocky Point in the Salish Sea, also known as the Georgia-Puget Basin, and afterwards went searching for baleen whales and killer whales. We were not to be disappointed after avoiding a big cargo vessel appearing out of a wall of sea fog. The crew knew where to look for baleen whales and the resident pod of killer whales (orcas). They took the time to let everybody watch the whales.

The crew supplied hats, gloves, sunscreen, binoculars and blankets and offered advice on any aspect of marine life. Although whale watching for CAN$133 including taxes per person is expensive, we were trilled to see orcas and the baleen whales so close and had had a wonderful time on board. Recommended.
