Inside the European Union May 08, 2010
Each year for Europe Day, the European Union opens up the main EU buildings in Brussels for an Open Day. The day celebrates the declaration of Robert Schuman on the 9th of May 1950 calling for the creation of the European Coal and Steel Committee, the seed of today's European Union.

We walked around the Berlaymont, the primary seat of the European Commission, and the Justus Lipsius building, the house of the Council of the European Union and the European Council. For Europhiles it is an interesting exploration of the various institutes and organisations that have united a continent, while I am sure Europhobes would condemn the expenditure on all of those free pens and miniature versions of the Charter of Fundamental Rights.

One of the activities struck me as amusingly bad public relations. A set of bicycles were installed and by riding the bike you pumped air into a balloon with the EU symbol on it. The balloon was inside a steel cage, so the activity essentially consisted of expanding the EU until it exploded under the pressure. In retrospect it may have been set up by Euroskeptics, as it was outside the main building and was packed up and moved after an hour. Or maybe someone inside the EU finally caught the unfortunate metaphor they created...
