Dutch Harbor Vacation Guide
Dutch Harbor is located within the city limits of Unalaska which is located on the islands of Unalaska Island and neighboring Amaknak Island which are connected by a bridge. Unalaska is in the chain of Aleutian Islands located off the coast of Alaska in the Bering Sea. Coordinates are 53°53′20″N 166°31′38″W.
Latest census shows a populaton of 4,347. Nearly 60% of the population is located on Amaknak Island, better known as Dutch Harbor. Also located here is the Dutch Harbor Naval Operating Base and Fort Mears of WWII fame, now a National Historic Landmark.
Dutch Harbor has been the largest fisheries port in the United States, in terms of volume of seafood caught, for nearly every year since 1981. It is the main port and field base for the Bering Sea crab fishery which is featured on the television show "Deadliest Catch".
Currently a pilot project is producing biodiesel from fish oil, a bi-product of the local fish processing industry in partner with the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Many of the fish processing plants have been using fish oil in their boilers for years although it does not burn as clean as diesel. Local factories process 3.5 million tons of fish oil annually.
