Durban Vacation Guide
Durban is a culturally rich city in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. With a population of about 3.5 million and a subtropical climate with beautiful long stretching beaches it's easy to see why it's a major centre of tourism.
Filled with lots of restaurants, shopping centres and beach activities it's ideal for a chilled out summer holiday. Surfing is big in this city and there are heaps of places to hire booards out to try catch some waves. There are many shark nets set up by the populated beaches but beware there have been incidents involving shark attacks and getting too far out into the ocean could be dangerous.
Like most areas of South Africa one should be aware of crime. It is not advised to be in certain areas of town at night and you should always travel in groups and know where you are going.
The Morningside area was nice - good bars and restaurants and an awesome hostel called Tekweni Backpackers. Durban has a really friendly vibe and people will hustle to sell you things whilst you sit on the beach, like ice-creams and necklace souvenirs.

May 30th The feelings I experienced while stepping off the plane for the first time in Africa were quite overwhelming. It was my 5th continent to visit and I was ready to explore with my Lonely Planet guide in my hand (even though I was incredibly jet lagged)! It was by far the furthest jou…

Durban is the sultry capital of KwaZulu/Natal Province, but something of a poor style relation of Cape Town. It is loud, disreputable, a little tattered at the edges, cultivates marijuana instead of vineyards, and languishes under the hot Indian Ocean skies in beach sandals, a sarong and sunglasses…

Some photos from a six week trip to South Africa in 2006. Explored much of Kwa-Zulu Natal and some of the Eastern Cape. Although I grew up in South Afica, every time I return i am left astounded by the natural beauty of the country. Highly recommended for anyone who's thinking of going.
