Durango Vacation Guide
Durango is home of the Durango-Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. This town of about 15,000 was begun back around 1880. Mining in the area brought the need for railroads and the Denver and Rio Grande brought in service. It sits at an elevation of 6,523 feet and the Animas River flows through.
Besides the famous railroad, the town and area are great fishing, rafting, hiking, and camping spots in the summer and there are several skiing areas close in the winter.
Durango is also home to Fort Lewis College.
