A Spectacular View and Ride via the Duquesne Incline May 26, 2012
The Duquesne Incline is an in incline railway, or funicular (also known as an inclined plane in Pennsylvania). The incline carries passenger from river level across from downtown Pittsburgh up Mt. Washington. From an observation deck at the top station, one can see the Pittsburgh skyline, the confluence of the Monongahela and Allegheney Rivers to from the Ohio River, and the many bridges crossing the rivers. Point State Park with its fountain and outline of Fort Pitt and located at the tip of the "Golden Triangle" is visible from the observation deck, as are Heinz Field (home of the Pittsburgh Steelers) and PNC Park (home of the Pittsburgh Pirates).

The Duquesne Incline opened in 1877 to provide transportation for workers living in the new houses then being built on Mt. Washington to get to their jobs in Pittsburgh. The incline was designed by Samuel Diescher, an engineer from Budapest. (He would have felt right at home in Pittsburgh's topography!) The incline was restored in 1964 and is owned today by the Port Authority of Allegheny County (the transit authority) and operated by the incline preservation group. The Duquesne and Monongahela Inclines are the two remaining funiculars in Pittsburgh.

The two original wooden cars are still in use. The incline traverses 794 feet of track to rise 400 feet above the river. At the top station there are museum exhibits and a gift shop in addition to the observation deck. Tours of the working of the cable machinery are available for 50 cents.

The fare is $2.25 one-way. (Cash only.) Free parking at the lower station.

A must-do in Pittsburgh!
