Duo Housing DC Washington Reviews

Farther away, but a very nice place to stay at Jul 14, 2016
Located north of the downtown area, and a few blocks from the Washington Convention Center, the Duo Housing DC can be tough to get to, as it can be quite a walk from the nearest Metrorail stop. The closest one is the Mt. Vernon stop, right underneath the Washington Convention Center. It is about a 10 minute walk. Or a 30-minute walk from the National Mall.

Entering the hostel, you will have to take your shoes off, before entering the main area, past the reception area. Once checked in, you will be given 2 different codes, to go through 2 different doors to enter inside.

There are dorms downstairs and upstairs, as the hostel is about 3 floors. I had the downstairs dorm, which has 8 beds. And it is not cramped at all. There are lockers, in the form of cabinet drawers, as if this was some kind of secret office. The dorm rooms are really nice. Though the downside, will be the number of electric outlets in the room, as there does not seem to be enough. Plus tougher to reach for those with the top bunk beds.

And if downstairs, you will more likely have to keep going up and down to access the bathrooms, which can be a pain. The showers are a bit cramped, and not enough hooks to hang your clothes. Plus not enough privacy either. But there is a separate room for toilets, and throughout the hostel, a toilet and sink.

Also, there is only one air-conditioning unit to cool the entire building. That could be a problem during the summer, as it can get quite warm downstairs. As a result, the door is often left open to help keep it cool, though it will be more noisy. But this is just a nitpick on my part, as I tend to sweat very easily.

And no laundry services in the building. Instead, you will have to walk a block or two to get to a place with laundry machines. For someone who relies on laundry, so I can pack light, I just cannot overlook this.

The WiFi is okay, and there are regular computers to use, as one of the few hostels remaining that are still working. To me, this is really a bonus, as I prefer a regular computer over a smartphone.

The best part? Pancake breakfasts are included. And sometimes served with chocolate chips. And very delicious. Even better, is that they are prepared by the staff. Served in the kitchen area, which is okay in itself.

The staff are nice and helpful. And the kitchen area is okay in itself. Though kind of small. There is a small supermarket nearby, so you can get some groceries there.

Overall, this hostel was a good one to stay at. I would not mind staying here again, mainly for the pancake breakfasts.
