Dún Lúiche (Dunlewey)is a small rural community in the Donegal Gaeltacht & lies in unique scenery at the foot of Mount Errigal, the highest mountain in the County. Ionad Cois Locha (The Dunlewey Centre) is situated on the shores of Dunlewey Lough in the shadow of the haunting and mysterious Poison Glen.
There is so much to do at the Lakeside Centre for young and old alike. Facilities include Restaurant, Tea-room, Craft Shop, Horse Riding, Adventure Play areas, Pets & Animals, Storytelling Boat Trips on Dunlewey Lake, Guided Tours and Weaving Demonstrations. Also offers traditional music sessions in July & August. The new An Óige (Irish Youth Hostel Assoc.) Errigal Hostel is now open. The village is close to one of the best preserved glacial landscapes in Europe with most of the major features visible, lateral morraines, the cwm or corrie, the run-off esker and much more. The seat of the extinct galcier now forms the Poisoned Glen so-called due to a mis-translation. The Irish word for poison, “neimhe” (pronounced niv-uh), differs in its spelling by only one letter from the word for Heaven, “neamh” (pronounced nyow-uh). The glen used to be called the Heavenly Glen by local people, as it was, to them, like they imagined Heaven itself to be. Thus an English cartographer made the mistake in translation that was to ‘poison’ the name of one of Ireland’s most beautiful places for ever. Once seen however this wonderous valley, village & landscape is unforgetable

About 10 miles from where I live in Ardsbeg, Gortahork, Donegal, is the magical village of Dunlewey (or Dún Luiche in Gaelic - meaning the Dún or fort of Lúgh). The village is small, really a ribbon on buildings including a good garage, McGeady's pub a large new Youth Hostel and a fascinating place called the Dunlewey Centre which includes a café (basic but wholesome if you stay off the fries!) an excellent crafts shop, a farmyard, weaving exhibitions, boat trips on the lake and a newly a...
