Dunkwa-on-Offin Vacation Guide

Dunkwa-on-Offin is located to the North of Ghana's Central Region. This is a large town (by Ghanaian standards) surrounded by heavily exploited rainforest which was built on the wealth generated by the local gold mines which also funded the construction of the main roads leading to the town. Unfortunately, with the gradual closing of the mines the town has slowly declined with the once grand colonial buildings now crumbling and decayed.

However a visit to the town is well worth it. Being off the beaten path means there are no real tourists spots and as such is quite a unique place to drop by. There are a couple of hotels, which are pobably also the best places to eat, and some great little 'spot bars' for drinking. The town's chief's house and a chance to view the local druming group are worth seeing.

The people of Dunkwa are very friendly, as are all those who we met in Ghana, and are one of the main reasons to come to the country. Those of white or asian origin will be called 'Bruni' which is a term of endearment meaning 'person from over the sea'. Children are likely to run up to you from great distances away when they see you in the street, chanting 'Bruni, Bruni, how are you? I am fine, thank you.' This is a phrase that they all learn as part of their English leasons.
