Dunajec River Rafting Trip
Dunajec River Rafting Trip Szczawnica Reviews
Aug 13, 2007
A rafting trip down a 15 km portion of the Dunajec River is a major tourist attraction in southern Poland. It makes a nice day trip from Kraków and is often combined with a visit to Niedzica Castle. I booked this trip for seven people and transportation to and from Krakow, the rafting trip and the castle tour were all included. This excursion requires an entire day. Be prepared for rain at any time!
Our driver came to pick us up promptly at 9:00 a.m. as we had agreed and we left for our rafting trip on the Dunajec River which is on the border between Poland and Slovakia. The drive from Kraków to the River took a little over an hour and the scenery along the way was really beautiful – green mountains and some pretty villages. The mountainous area was a big change for me, as I am used to a very flat Poland.
When we arrived at the river wharf it was raining pretty hard, so we bought some ponchos. There are a gift shop, a snack bar and information center there in case you need anything or have a little extra time before getting into your raft.
The rafting trip was really nice. It had been raining a great deal in the morning and the current was very swift, but this is in no way a very exciting ride – just a pleasant trip down the river, with nice scenery, which is appropriate for just about anyone, although the teenagers who were with us got a little bored. The ride down the river took about 2 hours – perhaps a bit less, and our driver met us at the drop off point down the river.
The scenery through the Pieniny Gorge is impressive and there are great views of the Three Crowns and Mt. Sokolica. The towering cliffs and limestone rock formations and picturesque mountain scenery are beautiful. Unfortunately the guide didn’t speak any English so we missed out on the obviously interesting and informative comments that he made as we floated down the river.
After the trip down the river, we returned to Kraków and were back in the city in about two hours.
