Duke Of Wellington Chelmsford Reviews
The Duke of Wellington Apr 02, 2011
The Duke of Wellington is a pub in Hatfield Peveral, Essex. I took my mother
there for mother’s day.
Situated in a small town not far from Chelmsford, The Duke of Wellington is a
large pub with a pleasant modern extension and a beer garden. It is part of a
pub chain, one of the ones that focuses on food, which normally puts me off a
little. But Mum wanted to go and, as she often is, Mum was right.
The pub has quite a long menu, including lots of specials. The focus is very
much on traditional British foods. Irritatingly, the first two things I wanted
had already run out – at 1pm on a Saturday, that was slightly annoying. But
eventually I chose something they actually still had, steak and ale pie. All
the food was lovely. The gravy with my pie had clearly come from actual meat
juices, rather than granules, and the pastry also looked like a real person had
made it for me, rather than like it had been made in a factory somewhere and
heated up. Mum’s fish was fresh and the batter was crispy. You order at the
bar, which is fine, and then the waitresses bring things over. The service was
great and friendly. If you aren’t driving, there is a decent range of wines by
the glass and some nice beers, and they do nice soft drinks like Fentimans too.
I may well go back to this pub, which I really liked. The only slight annoyance
was another family who let their kids run wild, and that’s obviously not the pub’s fault, but it does mean I might avoid lunch times the day before mother’s day!
