Probably the most hiked trail on Isle au Haut, Duck Harbor originates at the Ranger Station near the Town Landing and proceeds primarily south towards Duck Harbor Campground. If you plan on camping at Duck Harbor off season, you will need to stroll its entire 3.8 mile length towards your lean-to (in season the mail boat will stop at the dock there), and then another half mile down Main Road (which is a joke, it is more like a broad hiking path) to the campground.

But back to the trail, which is rated as moderate in the National Park’s Trail Information folder. That is a fair assessment as much of the way is blanketed by tree roots (nasty when raining) and twists through swampy conditions. I found trail maintenance pretty good, with railroad tie walkways wherever your boots would have been submerged. But you will likely encounter a few patches where the mud is unavoidable.

I hiked the middle two miles of this trail and there was no serious up and down, although I think you get faced with some minor elevation concerns in the final stretch heading south. Most of the path is in the woods, although the portion I hiked did offer a few coast views which were pretty, though not stunning.

There is a single spur trail off of Duck Harbor, Deep Cove Trail – details in the next review!
