Touchdown in my favourite city...alas, just a stopover!

We were woken at the ungodly hour of 3.30am with an alarm call (we'd only got a couple of hours sleep as we ended up watching a couple of episodes of Little Britain in the evening) and 5 minutes later our breakfast arrived! We were brought an amazing selection of pastries, toast and fruit juice, and was just enough to set us up for the day travelling. We left Al Maha at 4.30am and arrived at the airport a little after 5.45am, just in time to check in for our flight. After the usual prowling …

During our early morning cab-ride to the airport, the lady on the radio reported the the temperature would be around 41ºC (106ºF) today. Whoa! Dang! That's hot! Good day to be leaving I guess. So we are off to Amman, Jordan (relatively cool, I think!) with a three-hour layover in Bahrain. See you soon!

Everyone slept in due to the late night resulting from the Sea View Hotel incident…even Samia was up late with an upset stomach.  By the time we ate breakfast, showered and read the paper it was about 1PM before we pushed off.  I gained consensus to visit Dubai Museum, although Mark was lobbying for a return to Jumeirah.  The resort area is pretty incredible, but I have gained some idea of just how big Dubai is:  its twenty minutes to the airport;  thirty m…

Quick transit in Dubai International Airport en route to Cairo

And so, our full (well almost full day, we had time till 6pm) to see Dubai. Fabulous magnificent Dubai. Hot hotter hotter-than-hot heat filled Dubai. Rather than take the Big Bus tour available here, we spoke to our Hotel Concierge on fixing us up with a private taxi. Our taxi driver, whose name was Islam is a Pakistani, originally from Peshawar and has been living in Dubai for the last 20 years. He's an expert in showing people the sights whilst giving people the flexibility they n…

Dubai - Day 1
posted by:
Jul 26, 2007 - Jul 27, 2007
The next morning I awake at 8am. I take a hot shower due to lack of cold water. Then I survive breakfast without suffocating and step outside into the heat again. My first stop for today is Ibn Batutta Mall. Thinking the taxi ride would take only about ten minutes I’m quite surprised to arrive at my destination half an hour later. If you look at a map of Dubai it doesn’t look that big but the city actually spreads quite far. A taxi ride from the Old Town of Dubai to Ibn Batutta…

Dubai, UAE 2007: Dubai Travel Photos

7 days was just right to see Dubai and relax at the beautiful beaches! Water is seethrough and very warm. Not much fish, only lots of starfish hidden in the sand. For those who think "shopping", it is not much cheaper than in the US, but might be if you're from Europe, which is pretty expensive these days. Once there, you have to go on a Safari trip, which includes dune bashing, camel ride and belly dancing performance! Wild Wadi water park was fun, but a bit expensive for its size!

EMIRATES airlines is the seventh largest ailine in the world in terms of interanational passager carriage. It is currently the largest airline in the middle east and at the rate of it's current growth will soon be competing with larger international carriers for largest worl airline. For 10 years I have flown Emirates because of the service and on time departures. The ambiance and leg room per passager and individualized entertainment, can not be measured agains any other airline. As always …

A day in Dubai
posted by:
Jan 04, 2008 - Jan 25, 2008
I was supposed to take the 8am bus from Abu Dhabi to Dubai.  I was so tired the whole week that I wasn't able to wake up on time, not to mention I only had a couple of hours of sleep the night before.  I only have a couple of minutes to prepare and the temperature was freezing cold(Yes, I'm in Abu Dhabi and it is sooo cold here now)! The coffee didn't help and the cold shower made me feel worst. At 8am, my friend called me to know if the bus left already.  By that time, I …

A long walk

Well here I am in Dubai - in the United Arab Emirates. I have been here before and stayed in a resort hotel - it was fun and I enjoyed it but I was only there 2 days so it was OK (I get bored very quickly). This time I am staying at the Moevenpick Hotel which seems to be in a more central location. Nice hotel with great staff. Anyway, yesterday I managed to find a 5 hour window in my work and so grabbed the camera and headed out to find the "real" Dubai. The concierge recommended I visit the …

I made my flight! So I have arrived in Hamburg from Rome just in time but I only have less than two hours to catch my other flight to Manila. It's not a connecting flight so I still have to check-in again but first I have to get my other baggage stocked in the airport for 4 days. Phydie and I had to really run from terminal two of Hamburg airport to terminal one and that was really not easy with our bags and my heavy baggage! Anyway, I didn't miss my flight and I'm off to Manil…

My last days in Dubai, the time was ticking for the new year as well.  After 7 years of being in UAE finally, I have the heart of moving out.  Moving to the world still unknown to me.  Everyone was trying to talk me out of my decision, but hey, too long in a place made me feel stagnant inside.  I need to explore other horizons to grow.  So, whatever they said, I took it openly but my decision was planted firmly on the ground...I still wanna move to Vietnam, despite th…

Meet Henry!

So after a day of catching up with sleep, Henry and I decided to go out and see a little bit of Dubai.  We soon learned that we are actually quite a distance locale-wise to any hip places in Dubai except for Festival City which was recommended by our hotel's reception.  Since there are no bus systems that go in our direction, Henry suggested we take a taxi.  He must have been bored all day waiting for me to get up and get my bearings.  Old gnomes tend to get up early or do…

Dune Bashing in Dubai (oct 2006)
posted by:
May 14, 2007 - May 15, 2007
"Dune Bashing" is basically when you have someone pick you up in an SUV..you drive out pretty far to get to the desert area. The driver then deflates the tires on the SUV a little bit because otherwise you'll roll over on a dune. It is really crazy and kinda scary..you go up dunes not knowing whats on the other side cuz the wind constantly changes them..and you pretty much slide down the other side completely sideways..its so fun! You feel like you're going to flip over the entire time.…
