Dubai Zoo Reviews
The Dubai Zoo Jan 03, 2011
The Dubai Zoo is a stark contrast from the glitzy and glamourous new Dubai.
Created by a Dubai resident in 1967, the establishment is in dire need of redesign, not for visitor convenience, but more-so for welfare and humane treatment of the animals it houses. Having spent many an afternoon in one of the the best Zoo's in the world, The Singapore Zoo, I was reminded of exactly how different the experience can be for both its residents and its visitors if a zoo is not designed well.
It is common to read of news stories of the extravagant ventures of this country with an 11 million dollars Christmas tree (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_cq55pZ9do) and public vending machines for gold bars (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqWEhwTYUR8), yet I'm perplexed as to the ignorance of those in control and capable, to affect positive change for an entire zoo full of animals. Even a Facebook profile appears to be setup for the welfare of the Dubai Zoo animals (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=105900069456021).
With an entry fee of AED 2.00 (US$ 0.60) it is apparent the management realizes the competitive nature of the establishment and have priced it for what it deserves commercially. In fairness to the management, the excellent physical condition of the animals must be acknowledged. Perhaps it was due to the early part of the day, but all of the animals were remarkably lively and appeared to be very healthy - albeit in cramped and restrictive cages.
Children would - as expected - find the caged animals entertaining and may even enjoy themselves. However, this is a rare tourist attraction of Dubai that is best avoided.
