Dubai Cruise and Stay Reviews
Dubai Cruise and Stay Mar 19, 2011
We saw this cruise advertised a few months ago and because it combined a stay in Dubai we decided to book it and really had a great time.
Dubai was somewhere that we had never been to and we had friends that had told us how nice it was so we decided to give it a try the only thing that had stopped us booking this cruise in the past was because it was with Costa Cruises who we had been with before and it wasn't one of our favourite cruise lines mainly because of the fact that it was difficult to get away from all of the multi language announcements which we felt were rather obtrusive. However, I am pleased to be able to say that whilst this still happens they have reduced it quite substantially to a more acceptable level. This was our overall impression of the holiday:
1. Pre Cruise Communication - The pre cruise communication both with Costa and the travel agents was very poor as I had tried to find out what the new itineary was now that they were not going to Bahrain - Costa did not respond to my emails and I only received the revised itineary from the agents when I returned home. They certainly need to improve this aspect. The one good thing that happened before we travelled was that we had been upgraded to a Mini Suite and when speaking to fellow guests on our table they had also been upgraded. One other poor aspect was that the labels that we were sent to identify the ship and cabin on our baggage consisted of a printed piece of paper that you had to fold along it's length and staple or stick around the handle - of course everyone goes on holiday with a stapler and roll of sticky tape!!!
2 The Hotel - We stayed for 3 nights at The Sofitel Hotel in Dubai arriving there at about 09.00 and because our room was not ready we were upgraded to a Luxury Room which was very nice and had a lovely view of The Atlantis Hotel on Palm Island. There was a lot to do around the hotel with a good selection of bars and restaurants to choose from.
3. The Cruise Terminal - This is a new terminal and was very nice and comfortable and my only comment here would be of the long wait to get onto the ship and even when you were on the ship you had a long wait before you were allowed into your cabin. From leaving the hotel at 10.00 to getting access to our cabin at 18.30 is really a waste of a day and we would have appreciated being told that if we wanted to spend the day in Dubai and get to the ship at 18.30 this would have been more useful to us.
4 The Costa Luminosa - A very nice ship and easy to find your way around but we did notice that some of the ceilings were quite low but you quickly accepted this. It was a very clean ship and the staff were mostly excellent except the Tour Desk who when we asked if the Big Red Bus Tour was at the Cruise Terminal she denied all knowledge of it and could not even tell us where the ship docked – we went across to Customer Services who informed us straight away that it did and even showed us where on a map. Whilst the food in the Self Service Restaurant had a strong Italian theme dinner in the main restaurant had a very good choice and for us was much better. The only other thing that we found annoying was that guests were allowed to smoke in a number of public areas of the ship and this was not very nice having experienced other cruise ships where this was not allowed.
We didn’t go on any of the organized tours as we felt that they were very expensive and found alternative less costly ways of exploring the places that we visited.
