Just on the outskirts of Fuzhou there's a famous mountain called Gushan (drum mountain).
It's a frequent day travel for the people who live in the city to go to this mountain and climb it, either for the nature walk or just for the excersize. You can get there by bus (2 yuan) or Taxi (around 25 yuan from the center of the city). The park itself is for free, except for enterance fee to the monastery on the top.
There are 3 ways to climb the mountain:
1. climb it on the stairway path (1600 meters of sweaty walk but for me it's the best way to feel you are actually hiking and enjoying the nature around you)
2. cable car
3. by car - there's a road that leads all the way up to the top.
On the walking path you will see a lot of people going up and down, some are even running to the top. There are also a lot of places to buy drinks and crafts, even a couple of small restaurants. On the top there's a nice tower that overlooks the city and the main river of the city.
Follow the path to the north side of the mountain and you'll get to the beautiful monastery that sits in the middle of the forest on the top of the mountain (see attached pictures). This is a very famous budhist monastery and very recommended to visit. Also from the monastery it's possible to keep on going north east and walk through the big woods and by the huge rocks of the mountain. The scenery is really beautiful there.
Going down is very fast :) just run down on the stairs.
Remember, Fuzhou is very humid, so you'll sweat a lot on the way up and also it's usually raining here, so beware when you go down on the slippery stairs ;)
