Public transportation is quite difficult in Lombok. Taxi is quite expensive and public car (called bemo in Lombok) has limits route and operate until 05.00 pm only. If you want to set free your holiday in Lombok one choice is drive vehicle by yourself. Many places in Mataram and Senggigi offers car and motorbike for rent and your holiday will be effective because you can go in any part of Lombok by yourself.
Outside fulfill with complete equip like driving license and vehicle license (STNK), use helmet when use motorbike and obey the standard regulation there are some tips for driving in Lombok.
1. Be careful in traffic light
When traffic light green it means you can go ahead, but keep watch from opposite direction because there are many people do not care with traffic light and still go ahead when the light red.
2. Keep the distance with bemo (public car)
We never know when the bemos will stop to load or dropped their passengers. The bemo is rare give any sign to turn left, turn right ol will stop their vehicle. Better we still keep the distance with them.
3. Watch another vehicles
In Lombok the driver sometimes did not give any sign when they will stop, turn left or turn right. It is often happen the vehicle at your left side suddenly cut your way and across the road to the right. Watch their body language, if they turn their face behind maybe they will turned their vehicle to left or right. Blow the horn if needed.
4. Watch the road
The road condition in Lombok is not always good. There are many holes in the middle of the road.
Cidomo is Lombok traditional horse cart and become one of public transportation. The difference speed between cidomo and modern vehicles sometimes make traffic jam in narrow sreet. Watch the sign from cidomo when they want to turn right or left.
So, enjoy your travel in Lombok!!
