Poetic Music & Dance Show in Xi'an Nov 23, 2014
Located in the Datang Furong Garden (大唐芙蓉园), also known as 'Tang Paradise' is the Fengmingjiutian Theatre (凤鸣九天剧场), where there is a daily show offered called "Dream Back to Great Tang Dynasty"《梦回大唐》. It's a poetic music and dance show that pays tribute to the days of the Great Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) which had its capital city in Xi'an. It is characterized as a time of prosperity and considered a golden age of the arts, literature and poetry, often romanticized in Chinese culture. Like the Han dynasty it also benefited from trade with the West along the silk road.

The show has six episodes, that has a theme of dreaming back to the Tang Dynasty and telling some stories of those times with music and dance in pantomime to take you back in time. It's a kind of spiritual journey in Chinese culture. The episodes are:

Episode 1: "Dressing up ornamentally", wearing colorful dressing, dance with Lady Yang, the most favored concubine of Tang Emperor.

Episode 2: "Dreaming to invite Emperor Li Shimin" the military strengths of the Tang Dynasty with mighty and prestige.

Episode 3: "Dreaming to bathe in Huaqing Hot Spring" like a lotus fairy

Episode 4: "Dreaming in Xiyu Area", with breadth of vision and unyielding tolerance.

Episode 5: "Dreaming to tour in Qujiang", with millions of people cheering for peace and prosperity.

第六幕:“夢回大唐” 大唐盛典 万民祈福

Episode 6: "Dream Back to the Great Tang Dynasty" with grand ceremony and blessings to its citizens.

It's very nicely performed, quite colorful and has a side screen in English to guide you to what is thematically being performed in each scene. It's not entirely necessary to understand it, and it stands on its own with the music, dance and costumes. The show lasts about 90 minutes and the cost is 198 RMB (~$30 USD), which includes entrance fee to the Datang Furong Garden. I enjoyed it as a cultural experience to see something like this in China, though it perhaps has greater meaning for a Chinese tourist than a Westerner who may not know much about the Tang Dynasty. Just enjoy the dream is good advice perhaps without too much analysis of it's deeper meaning!

@Bill - They didn't seem to mind, so I took photos as I pleased, with no flash, of course!

Usually for live productions they frown on photography, but these folks don't seem to mind.
