An introductory walk around Yangon Feb 02, 2017
On our first day in Yangon we explored the city on our own two feet and saw many buildings and places of interest, so if you are keen walkers and don't mind the heat i suggest that you follow in our footsteps.

Start at Yangon Central Railway Station by looking at the architecture and old engine that is on display at the east end of the station.

Facing the station go to your right and then turn left down Gyo Phyu Street, which takes you across a bridge over the railway line. After 200 m you will reach Bogyoke Aung San Road where you take a right. After 400 m you will come to Bogyoke Market which you can easily spend an hour exploring

Return the way that you came visiting a Hindu temple and mosque on the other side of the street.

Turn right at Sule Pagoda Street and walk 2 blocks to Sule Pagoda which you may like to enter for a fee.

Sout-east of Sule Pagoda is Mahabandoola Park where you can shelter from the sun and take a drink under the trees.

You can see some famous buildings around the perimeter of the gardens including City hall, Immanuel Baptist Church, the Supreme Court and of course Independence Monument at the center of the gardens

On the south-east corner of the gardens take a left along Merchant Street until you come to Pansodan street (100m) then turn right. In this street you will come across many old colonial buildings, some of which have been renovated and some stand empty. At the end of the street you will reach the Myanmar Ports Authority Building and here you might like to cross Strand Road by the overpass and look at the ferries going back and forward across the river to Dalah.

Return by the overpass to Strand Road turn right which will take you past the Strand Hotel, the British Embassy and the GPO.

Immediately after the post office turn left up Bo Aung Kyaw Street and after two blocks you will reach the Secretariat. Unfortunately one cannot enter this huge compound as the whole area is being renovated.

Immediately after the Secretariat take a right on Arawahta Road where you will pass an old colonial school on your left, then turn next left on Theinbyu Road where you can take a look at the Sikh Temple.

Take the next left along Bogyoke Aung San Road and you will see St.Mary's cathedral on your left at the end of the block.

Once you have taken a look at the cathedral you can take a taxi to your accommodation.
