Doughnuts with a twist Jul 16, 2012
If you like to experiment with doughnuts (pistachio, as an example), this is the place to check out. Some flavors worth checking out: creme brûlée, tres leches, pistachio, blackberry, to name a few. It tends to get crowded, so getting a seat may not be the easiest thing, but you can always eat while you walk in NY. Grab a doughnut from here and walk westward to Joe The Art of Coffee (405 W 23rd Street) and grab a coffee (one of the best in the city), and you have your mid-afternoon sugar high.

Extraordinary Doughnuts in New York City Oct 06, 2010
New York City locals smile when asked about the Doughnut Plant. A Lower East Side institution, the Doughnut Plant began in 1994 in the basement of a tenement building. The original location is now based at 379 Grand Street, with several stores worldwide. The non descript store front gives visitors little hint of the hidden treats inside.

Flavors range from carrot cake to creme brulee to apple cinnamon to toasted almond to vanilla bean. Chocaholics will love the blackout doughnut, while jam fans will want to try the blackberry jam doughnut, as all filling is homemade. Flavors and glazes are seasonal such as chestnut at Christmas time. Doughnuts also come in various shapes and sizes, including square-shaped.

I tried both the creme brulee and the toasted almond, which were both fresh and delicious. The pastry is flaky and the taste is wonderful. If pistachio is on the menu, my brother (who lives in New York City), says this is not to be missed.

The original location itself is small and a little run-down (the fly zapper near the register is a bit creepy) and seating is limited. One bench is outside and I suggest getting doughnuts to go. Lines will be long (this shop is very popular!) but the friendly staff is quick at juggling orders. Be sure to get there early as the shop only stays open until the day's batches are gone. I got there early in the afternoon and many choices were out of stock.

The cost per doughnut is high at $2.00 to $3.00 each, but it's worth it. These doughnuts are without question the best I've tasted.

I will definitely be back the next time I'm in New York City, as I'm now determined to try a pistachio doughnut. The Doughnut Plant means great doughnuts with a gourmet taste.

You haven't tasted donuts until these.. Mar 28, 2010
Oh my Lord.. who would've ever guessed this amazing doughnut place would exist adjacent to Chinatown?? Flavors that blow your mind, from my favorite marzapan yeast donut to jam-filled, creme filled yumminess. If you're in chinatown in the afternoon, and have 30 minutes to spare waiting in line, YOU MUST GO HERE. At night, the doughnuts are still good, but not hot and fresh.

It's not cheap though. A dozen donuts runs something like $40 depending on which donuts you choose. And they don't last more than a day, so definitely get a bunch of friends together and share in the goodness! =)

Thanks to Tracy for finding this place, I never would have discovered it on my own!
