Doubletree Cariari Hotel San Jose Reviews
A Tropical Paradise in San Jose, Costa Rica Apr 27, 2010
I normally would not stay in this type of hotel, but between using rewards points, discounts for the start of the rainy season and comments on TravBuddy and Lonely Planet (and a few other guides) about downtown San Jose, I decided to stay at the Doubletree Cariari, outside town. Ciudad Cariari is an area filled with hotels off the Pan-American Highway, roughly halfway between the international airport and central San Jose.
I was amazed at the services offered at the Doubletree including a restaurant and bar, two car rental desks, a travel desk, gift shop, stunning pool area, art gallery, beauty salon, business center (which had excellent free internet connections), wireless internet, gym and casino! The gardens are brightly colored with vibrant flowers and the hotel is well designed, to give visitors a tropical feeling. While the hallways are covered, the plants by each room are in the open, so guests can hear crickets and frogs at night, with birds chirping in the morning. A pond in the lobby is filled with turtles. The lobby and restaurant areas are open air, which feels very comfortable in San Jose's climate--especially in the mornings and evenings.
A warm chocolate chip cookie is given at check-in, which is a nice gesture after a long flight.
Large rooms are decorated in a Costa Rican style with tiled floors, archways and local woods. My mattress was comfortable and the room at night was quiet. The size of the bathroom was enormous and roughly double the size of my bathroom at home. The air conditioning and the shower both worked well, while my room was spotlessly clean.
The staff are some of the friendliest I have come across and were very helpful (and tolerant) with my "Spanglish". They were correcting my pronunciation and teaching me new words. Everyone smiles and greets you with an "hola" or "buenos dias".
I had to laugh that when I checked in, my tv had static. I wasn't in Costa Rica to watch television, but the hotel sent two technicians anyway. I had to keep saying "Es no problema--es bien" (it's no problem, it's good) as they may have stayed for hours, trying to help.
Food at the hotel is expensive and dinners were more than I would pay at home. There is, however, a breakfast buffet for US$ 10.00, which is not too bad of a deal if you are not planning to eat again until dinner. A huge assortment of food is available in the buffet, including fresh eggs, sausage, cereals, yogurts, rice and beans, pineapples, mangos, bananas and delicious pastries.
I was really watching my budget and there are a couple of cheap restaurants down the road, along with an AM/PM Mini-Mart, where visitors can buy fruits, pastries, sandwiches and coffee. Across the highway is a spotlessly clean supermercado (supermarket) where Gallo Pinto, a Costa Rican rice, beans and egg dish, is available for less than US $2.00. A food court is next to the supermarket which includes the standard McDonalds.
The Cariari area is completely safe for visitors, and I walked all through the neighborhoods and along the highway. Unfortunately, Cariari is not close to much (except other hotels), so tourists will need a bus, taxi or rental car to get around. The location is a downside to this hotel.
Overall, the staff and grounds are what make this hotel special. If you are in the San Jose area and can find a travel special for this hotel, I highly recommend it. Me gusta mucho (I liked it a lot).
