Comfortable & Convenient in Downtown Salt Lake Feb 25, 2014
I stayed at the DoubleTree while in Salt Lake City for a conference in February, so this review reflects the hotel during the week (Tues-Thurs) in the off-season. It could be a different place on the weekends or during the summer.

I booked a king suite - living area, mini-refrigerator and microwave, two desks, two TVs, etc. Definitely more space than I needed as I wasn't often in the room, but I could see where it would be great for an extended stay or for people who like/need space to stretch out. The room was clean and well-laid out with the small exception of the closet. Doors to the bedroom, bathroom and closet are all in the same small area of space. In order to get into the closet, the bedroom door has to be shut. There are now a few extra dings on the doors from where I forgot to close one before opening another. Also, the bedroom lacks overhead light or even a floor lamp controlled by a wall switch. The only light in the room is from the bedside lamps. Not a big challenge - just required shuffling a bit in the dark when I came in late and had to make my way from the bedroom door to the bed itself. I also found myself with a broken shower-head. It was quickly replaced while I was at dinner after a stop at the front desk.

I ate lunch my first day and breakfast my last day at the hotel. (My room was booked using a special winter rate that included a $10 credit to the gift shop and buffet breakfast. Normally breakfast is not included. The gift shop stocks primarily snacks and quick meals for the microwave.) Service was always quick and friendly. The pizza was fresh and hot, and the buffet was well-stocked with a variety of options. Seating was plentiful with tables in the restaurant and in the hotel atrium. The hotel also has a bar.

I took advantage of the fitness center and indoor pool. The fitness center is small - free weights, 2 treadmills, an elliptical and a recumbent bike. Whether I went in the evening or in the early morning, the center was full. The pool, on the other hand, was completely empty. (Probably a reflection of the weekday business crowd.) I also took advantage of the business center to print my boarding passes and the free shuttle to the airport. If you prefer to take public transportation or are going someplace the shuttle doesn't travel to, the hotel is a short walk (less than 10 minutes) to the Courthouse stop on the city's light rail system.

Overall, I found the hotel to be a great value. Good location with easy access to places in the city, courteous staff, on-site restaurant, fitness center...everything I needed for my time in Salt Lake City.
