Warning about rabies in Bali Oct 18, 2010
Until December 2008,Bali was considered to be RABIES FREE.But since few weeks, several local people, bitten by stray dogs have died from rabies,a disease which affects the brain after an incubation of several weeks. The route of infection is usually by a bite exceptionnaly via an aerosol.

The Denpasar administration has vaccinated these last weeks 17000 dogs BUT you could become rabid by the cats, the cattle, the MONKEYS,the squirrels, the mice...and the BATS.

So if you are planning to visit Bali, avoid direct contact with dogs,cats,monkeys,bats...

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, you should see a doctor.

UPDATE 18/10/2010:

Last week Bali has reached the HUNDREDTH DECEASED(bitten by a dog last year) attributed to RABIES.

But fortunately the things will change soon thanks to the World Society for the Protection of Animals(WASP)which, together with the local government, will vaccinate 70% of the 500,000 estimated Balinese dogs, most often semi-feral.

Everybody hope that Bali recovers its rabies free status on 2012.
