NYC is a HUGE place. Most people who have never been, unless they come from Los Angeles, don't really understand the city's tremendous size. There is a ton to see and do, but unless you have a lot of time, it is worth it to spend a bit of money on taxis. Learning to use the subway and public transit is possible, but not worth it for a short visit. If you don't have a lot of time, one place you simply must see is Time Square. It has people 24/7 and it a hub of activity. If you plan ahead, it is also possible to find cheap tickets for musicals -- no trip to NYC is complete with out seeing at least one show. Finally, if you like pizza, you simply must try some NYC pizzerias.

Just don't be scared to take the train and stick with the taxis all the times. NYC transit is a part of the experience. :D Just make sure if you're going during rush hour walk fast. Lol.

If you haven't been to New York yet, Times Square is a must see. But once you spend some more time there, Times Square gets pretty old.
