Donna is a town of about 16,000 (up 11% since 2000) located along US Highway 83 in Hidalgo County in the South Texas Plains section of Southern Texas. The area that would become the town of Donna was first settled in the 1890s by two East Texas businessmen, T. J. Hooks and A. F. Hester. They set up farms and irrigation systems to open the area up for agriculture. In 1904 the St Louis, Brownsville & Mexico Railroad came here and two towns were established and named for Hooks' daughters, Donna and Beatrice. Donna Hooks Fletcher was well known for her beauty, independence, and belief in God. She started several successful businesses, was known for her kindness and generosity, and was considered a modern woman before her time. There is a statue of Donna Hooks Fletcher in the city park and Donna also boasts a nice library. Donna has a nice little historic district with a few buildings of historical and/or architectural interest. I liked this church (photo 3) pretty well.

When I read the title, I though you were going to write about an old flame, Jim!
