Domaine Johannisberg Geisenheim Reviews
Wine tasting as it ought to be Mar 29, 2008
The Johannisberg castle dates back to the time of Charlemagne. The history of wine producing in this region (Rheingau) goes way back. Johannisberg is proud to be the oldest Riesling vineyard of the world. Here the Spätlese (late harvest) was discovered by coincidence (due to late arrival of permission for the harvest).
The wine estate is established in an old monastery, so in fact this is not a wine "castle". I took part in a wine testing and cellar tour, which was very professionnally guided.
First we visited the estate with the production stages. Afterwards we descended to the Holy of Holies, the wine cellars. The stairway down showed a lot of fungus, by which the specialists can read the cellars climate. An impressive collection of wine barrels was waiting to get bottled. Far down in the cellar - behind bars - are some rooms full of wine bins with old to very old (and probably undrinkable) bottles of wine.
The proof of the wine is in the tasting.
We were presented a variety of white wines of high quality. This is Riesling at its best! I have had less interesting afternoons...
