The best place on the south coast to view dolphins and whales in the wild! Sep 27, 2011
Dolphin Watch Cruises, is by far the best cruise I have been on anywhere in Australia where you can view both dolphins and whales in the wild at such a close proximity. It is also an award winning company. Cruises are on the pristine waters of Jervis Bay Marine Park.

Located in the sea-side town of Huskisson - a very popular holiday destination for Sydney residents - is only a 2.5hr drive south of Sydney City. Perfect for a day trip! I have been on this cruise twice - once with my High School a few years ago, and again last October with family, and both times I have seen a tonne of whales (more than 10) and dolphins.

Jervis Bay is fortunately placed so that the migration of the whales, both north and south, can be observed as they pass the entrance to Jervis Bay, frequently entering the bay to rest. The majority of whales sighted at Jervis Bay are the Humpback whales, which migrate along the east coast from June to November. There are also 80-100 resident bottlenose dolphins inside Jervis Bay all year round.

The shortest cruise is 1.5hrs, and the longest 3hrs (I recommend this one - more time to find and watch the whales!). The boats are big and fast, with different levels for viewing, and standing area all the way around so you are guaranteed to see the animals! Complimentary morning and/or afternoon tea provided on all cruises. Boats are not allowed within a certain distance of the whales, so when one is spotted, the engine is turned off, and you wait for the whales to come to you. They are very curious animals, and every time our boat stopped and waited, they came closer and closer! A good idea to take binoculars, as there is a lot of searching for the whales whilst cruising around the bay. A camera with a decent zoom also, as its not a guarantee they will come close to the boats.

I suggest taking a big water/wind proof jacket, even if it looks like a sunny day, as it can get quite windy out on the bay, and you sometimes even head out into the open waters of the ocean. Don't forget to apply sunscreen either (as I did) - the sun reflects off the water making it very easy to get burnt quickly and without realizing.

I recommend this cruise for anyone looking for an experience of a lifetime! It was just amazing!!
