Affordable option in the Hotel Zone of Manzanillo May 05, 2011
This is a good option to stay at the Hotel Zone in Manzanillo. I think it recently changed owners, as there are some ads saying "Playa Sol Manzanillo" in some places of the hotel.
Ok, first the good things. The building is definitively beautiful, all white and with lots of Bougainvilleas everywhere. The rooms are nice and spacious, with good air conditioning. The view is absolutely gorgeous, you could stay watching for hours. They offer a breakfast buffet with your stay, which I must say is very complete and the food is really good. You can have from the mexican chilaquiles and scrambled eggs, to just cereal, fruit or yoghurt.
The pool area is nice, but sometimes a bit packed with families and couples. We found that the customers of this hotel are mostly families, so expect to see a lot of kids. There is a small view of the ocean from the pool, but not the infinity edge style.
There are lots of stairs everywhere in the hotel, because all of the hotel zone is very hilly, so expect to walk up and down a lot! No escalators or elevators. Parking can be a bit tight, but you can park outside the hotel if you can't find a spot.
The hotel beach area was ok, but the sand was black (due to volcanic ash), and the beach was a bit rocky.
Alright, now the issues with this hotel. The first is definitively the ammenities. They provide no soap, shampoo, cream or drinking water. I found that a bit annoying. The maid service is done way too late, so they may arrive while you are taking your siesta. The WiFi service was on and off for long periods of time and mostly slow, and the towel service at the pool ends at 6 (!)
With that said, I don't think this hotel was a bad option, it definitively wasn't, but there might be some other hotels in the same price range that offer a little better service.

The Dolfin Cove Inn, like many of the touristy hotels in Manzanillo, is located up in the hills.
The hotel is a collection of white 2 or 3 story buildings on perched on the side of a cliff. The reception is at the top and most guests have to walk down stairs to access their building.
The best features of the hotel are great views, comfortable beds and nice-sized rooms. The breakfast was okay however some had to wait for tables because it can get crowded after about 9.
The hotel didn't include any toiletries in the bathroom (shampoo, bar of soap) which at its price point should be standard. The Wifi was slow and sometimes didn't work for a few hours.
In terms of recreation the hotel has beach access at the bottom. It's small and a bit rocky. You can get food or drinks table side near the beach but don't expect anything fancy.
There is also a pretty good pool higher up near the rooms. It's a nice pool but at the time we were there it was FULL of kids and families. If you're looking for peace and quiet this may not be the pool for you.
