I wish I was good at taking photos of people in markets, but I'm not, so all I can present here are some photos I snapped with my mobile. It's a real shame, because Dohuk's market is great...a central covered section around an old mosque, spreading out to include a huge area of semi-covered lanes. It's also multi-storey in parts...look out for hidden stairwells which can take you to a raised gold market or a basement fruit hall. The fruit and vegetable market in particular is photogenic, and is probably at its liveliest at night, when each stall is lit by lamps.

At first sight, it doesn't seem like a touristy market at all, but look hard enough and you can find a cluster of stalls selling souvenirs like Kurdistani keyrings and flags, as well as Kurdish music CDs.

Don't miss out on the juice bars which offer refreshment on practically every alleyway. There's even a juice section of the bazaar. Pomegranate (nar) is a good choice, as is tamarind (tamarhindi) or raisin (zabib). Most offer ice cream and sweets as well, and, unlike teahouses which are mainly for men, they are absolutely fine for women.
