Dofflemyer Point Lighthouse Sep 23, 2013
The Dofflemyer Point Lighthouse is the southernmost light in Puget Sound. It marks the eastern side of the entrance into Budd Inlet which leads further south to Olympia, the Washington state capitol.

The original light dates back to 1887 and was a lens lantern mounted on top of a twelve-foot stake. Those post lanterns had a drum-type lens which produced a bright fixed light. A large tank encircled the top of the lens and held enough fuel for eight days. That old light and two others in the area were maintained by a light keeper who visited once a week by rowboat to clean the glass, fill the fuel tanks, and trim the wicks.

The present 30 foot pyramidal concrete tower was built in 1934 and upgraded with a small non-rotating drum-lens using an electric bulb to produce a 1,500 candlepower light. The Lighthouse Service also installed an electric fog signal. But unlike most lighthouses, the new Dofflemyer Point light had no full-time keeper so a local resident was contracted to maintain the light and activate the fog horn when needed.

In the early 1960s the U. S. Coast Guard automated the light with photoelectric cells to turn it on at dusk and off at dawn. But a local contract keeper was still required to activate the fog signal. Finally, in 1987 the lighthouse was fully automated. In 1995 the Dofflemyer Point Lighthouse was listed on the Washington Heritage Register and was also placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, the beacon's white signal flashes six seconds on and six seconds off and is visible for nine miles. The fog horn is activated by an automatic sensor that detects moisture in the air. The lighthouse is located in Boston Harbor which is seven miles north of Olympia. It sits on a private beach and, although the site is not open to the public, the tower can be seen from the nearby marina docks.
