Dockhoun Geusthoue, Pakbeng, Laos Reviews
Budget guesthouse Oct 04, 2011
After crossing the Thai / Laos border and deciding to take the 2 day slow boat down the Mekong, Pakbeng was the small town for the mandatory stop and overnight stay (June 2011). The people who oversee you onto the boat on the Laos side of the border at Huay Xia offer you accommodation at the Pakbeng stop and write you an invoice to show the guesthouse when you arrive. Not knowing any better and worried that everyone on my boat would be rushing for limited accommodation when we arrived at Pakbeng, I decided to book the guesthouse while on the boat. I paid THB 300. Word of advice: no need to book in advance in the low season. I sat next to a Russian traveller who said he was going to take his chances when we got there, stayed at Monsavan paid THB 200 and said it was really good.
The guesthouse is located on the main street. Don’t worry there is only one! As soon as you disembark the boat, you will be surrounded by locals offering rooms. Just keep walking up the main road (just like sheep, follow everyone else). About 200m from where you left the boat, the guesthouse is on the right had side.
1. The room comprised 2 single beds, with fan
2. Separate bathroom (no towel or toiletries provided)
3. Great view of mountains and the Mekong River
1. Breakfast not included in price (although there was a range of options to choose from)
Overall average - recommended for budget travellers only (in pairs would be better).
Pakbeng is a small town and from the exterior only, it seems that most guesthouses would be similar. This guesthouse is passable, if only for the fact that I had to stay there for one night.
The following morning I chose to eat breakfast in the hotel. More advice: the locals know that most people use Pakbeng as a one-night stopover. So the following morning the main street is lined with people selling freshly made sandwiches. Pick yourself one up for breakfast, and then another one or two for the 6 hour boat-ride onto Luang Prabang
