4x4 minibuses - great trip Nov 24, 2010
The Doñana National Park is possibly the best place in Europe for wetland flowers and birds - not that the mammals are any letdown - I have never seen wild boars as prolific anywhere, one with a hare in its mouth not intending to be put off its supper by a mere minibus!

Basically the huge river estuary of the Guadalquivir became silted up and tnen huge sand dunes were created for many miles parallel to the coast behind which the river waters flood (still of course having a single outlet to the sea). In a very hot summer it can dry up but at any other time of year there is so much to be seen. I have done a review of the Hotel Toruño in El Rocío and the view from my window showed many types of ducks and waders. From nearby I saw black-legged stilts but it was too early for the flamingoes.

I was really lucky to meet a couple living in Devon near where I was born, who had booked the 4x4 minibus trip for the next day. They offered me a lift to the park centre at Acebuche - and who turns down an offer like that?

Now a tip for anyone lucky enough to be doing the same. They have tickets in a wide number of languages, all of which have the types of animals and birds most likely to be seen. It is unlikely that most non-Spanish people know the words in Spanish. So get a Spanish ticket as well - they will cancel it for you as a ticket but, when the driver gets excited and points at something, you can tell from the Spanish list and your own ticket whet he is talking about.
