Well I got the word that I'm going to be spending 6 months in Djibouti, two weeks prior to departure.  My first reaction was this must be a joke.  So after taking it all in, I decided to look up any information on Djibouti that I could find.  After all I've never heard of this place …

We have thousands of blogs up here talking about all of the wonderful places we have been.  Let's do something a little different.  Many of us have been somewhere that we would never describe as wonderful.  Let's talk about them.  In 1984 and 1985 I was unlucky enough to make a …

A Trip to Tadjourah

When visiting Djibouti most people think Djibouti City, or the capital.  This is where the port is located, Camp Lemonier (US Navy base), a french military installation, and where 90% of the population of the country resides.  Yes there is a bustle of activity in the old city, but it is a…

I'm lucky to be on a military base. The rest of the city is dirty and poor, and expensive if you're American. But the people are generally very friendly. There is scuba diving, a five star resort, and some clubs with more $5 whores and French dudes than you'd ever want to see. If you're more of the humanitarian there's plenty of work to do as well.

Bike ride to Somaliland: Djibouti Travel Photos
posted by:
Mar 18, 2007
It was a hot day. We passed by a garbage dump, an auto-salvage dump, goat carcases stacked waist high, goat quarantines, moved to a rocky single lane road, and finally hit the border of Somaliland. We talked with the guards but didn't pass onto actual Somali land. Bummer. We were close though and the ride was exciting. On the way home heat sickness set in and it was a miserable time getting back. Round trip was 22 miles; not the longest ride, but the hardest ride I've completed.

Well I have been here for a week (since 8 July 2009) and it seems I have been here a month.  The trip over from the US was a long one, and since the company I work for did all the coordination I was at their mercy.  I so much more prefer to handle my own travel affairs.  I was routed…
