Dixie National Forest Reviews
Recreational Activities in the Dixie wilderness. Aug 23, 2010
Dixie National forest is located in the State of Utah. It occupies almost 2 million acres of land, stretching over 170 miles across Southern Utah. On my recent trip to Southern Utah, I happened to spend time within Dixie National Forrest. The forest is divided into 4 parts: Markagunt is a high altitute forest, Pansaugunt, Aquarius Plateau and Boulder Mountain.
The 83,000 acres of wilderness is divided into 3: Pine Valley, Box-Death Hollow, and Ashdown Gorge. Pine Valley and Ashdown Gorge offer opportunities for solitude, horseback riding, and hiking. Box-Death Hollow offers opportunities for solitude and hiking, but the terrain is much too rough for horses. Other activities include hunting, fishing, camping, nature study, wildlife attraction and winter sports.
The Markagunt High Plateau Scenic Byway U 14 from Cedar City to its junction at US highway 89 is a popular area in Southern Utah, known as Cedar Mountain. This Utah scenic route crosses through Dixie National Forest, the largest national forest in Utah, consisting of almost two-million acres of wooded areas, ponds, lakes and mountains.
