Divi Flamingo: Bonaire seen through pink glasses Apr 19, 2012
This hotel is located close to the airport and on walking distance from town. When booking I was a little concerned about noise from the airport, but this is absolutely no issue. The only really large plane that lands here is the daily KLM flight, and you hardly hear it.

The location can't be beaten. Pleasantly close to town, the hotel grounds are a strip of a few hundreds of meters right at the coast. From the restaurant and the ocean view rooms you look right on the little uninhabited island of Klein Bonaire. For shopping you have to get into town (only a 10 minutes walk if you take iit easy), but for all sort of little things you might need there is a Chinese supermarket ("Sunshine Supermarket") no more than 200 meters out of the Casino exit. They sell everything from drinks to mosquito repellent incense to cutlery to tools.

Divi Flamingo is a resort style hotel, with several buildings hosting the rooms. Only a limited number of them have ocean view and they are obviously more expensive (but worth the price difference in my opinion).

Rooms are not really small, but also not enormous. They have a tub with shower, sink, toilet and toiletries are provided. A fridge is available for your use as well as a safe. The ocean view rooms are slap bang at sea. From your balcony you can see the parrot fish swim by. It is the west coast of Bonaire, so you will see a gorgeaous sunset every day.

Around May 1st 2012 there will be (paid) Wi-Fi on the entire resort, however at the date of this review (April 28, 2012) there is free Wi-Fi in the lobby only (connection quality varies). Right now they are experimenting so the connection is on and off...

Amenities include two pools, two restaurants (Chibi Chibi and Calabas), a beach bar with happy hours from 6 to 7 p.m.(buy one, get one free), and managers cocktail with free fruit punch and rum punch on Fridays from 5 - 6 p.m.

The opening hours of the restaurants and the bar are not always logical, so it is advisable to check.

The beach bar gives access to a pier with sunbeds. Along the hotel, the water is crystal clear and very clean (which is the case on the entire hotel grounds).

Also there is a Dive shop, a business center (with modem connection, expensive), a PADI diving school, a day spa, an activity desk, a Hertz rental car desk, and a gift shop on the hotel grounds.

Breakfast is not included unless you book a package that says otherwise, but the quality is good, the choices are acceptable and a special mention deserves the omelet station.

Service is friendly.

On arrival at the Divi Flamingo Beach resort the first thing that strikes and maybe even hurts your eyes is that it is….. PINK!!! ; and yellow, and blue, and green. In short: very, very, very colorful, inevitably leaving the impression of a candy store.

Check-in was quick, and the guests receive cards that they can show when ordering food and drinks and putting these on the hotel bill, and special cards for the towel station which are located at the beach bar and the front desk. Like many hotels in the tropics, the reception lobby is in fact a covered open air place, pleasant enough to hang out, but beware of the mosquitoes there atr dawn and dusk.

The room was not too big but extremely nicely located as close to the sea as one can get. The sea at this room (103, but this also applies to rooms 101 through 106) was literally less than a meter from the balcony floor at high tide, and at low time maybe 3 meters. Seagulls and other sea birds as well as crabs, huge parrot fish and other animals, right on your doorstep as if you are not even there. But again, the colors….. It is something the eyes need to get used to.

It was also visible on the doorposts and other wood work for example that the hotel is not brand new. In the bathroom it looked like a piece had been bitten by someone from the toilet cover, and the faucets were not tightly fitted and moved when you tried to open them. By the way, to the credit of the hotel, these defects were repaired in a few days without us even ever mentioning it to the front desk.

All together, the arrival at the hotel left some quirky mixed first impressions. But soon these first impressions would change already very soon into a very pleasant feeling about almost everything at this resort, and how happy would I be to return here a next time.

At the reception desk also vouchers were given for free welcome cocktails. They can be used in one of the restaurants or bars, in our case at the Chibi Chibi, one of the hotel’s eateries. It has two balconies overhanging the water, of course pink being the dominating color, and with lighting spots on the water, so that even in the night you can see the parrot fish swimming by.

The food was reasonably good (the blackened mahi-mahi even excellent), the service was what we would now call “pleasantly Caribbean”, but what we would call “a bit slow” in a previous life, before having visited Bonaire… But everything with a charming smile and mostly a “bon dia”, so we learned to appreciate the laid back service quite a lot.

Shared a studio apartment here with a friend. It was approx $900 for 10 days. The room was clean and updated. However the bathroom was tiny.

Included in the package was breakfast, airport pickup/drop, beach towels and unlimited scuba tanks for shore diving. Why is this important? Coz most people go to Bonaire for scuba diving.

The location is great, walking distance to the downtown area and restaurants. 10 mins drive to the airport.

The restaurants in the resorts are not much to talk about. They were empty most of the time. Staff are friendly and helpful.
